For anyone who’s nervous about starting college and making friends, I can assure you that as long as you put yourself out there, you will find your community.
Whether it’s a cultural group, a sorority, an acapella group, or a community service club, everyone finds their place at BU and makes it their home. Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of being the secretary and president of the organization and continuing to foster that same community for others as they enter BU.Īs I’ve reflected on my time in college with my other senior friends, I’ve realized that everyone eventually finds their people on campus. As someone who attended a predominantly white high school, I had very few Latinx friends, so Alianza Latina became the place where I felt that I could safely navigate what being Latina means to me. I nervously mustered up the courage to go to the first meeting by myself, and as soon as I entered the Howard Thurman Center, I was immediately surrounded by the familiar sound of Spanglish chatter and latin music in the background.
After seeing them again at Splash, BU’s annual activities fair, I knew that I needed to attend their meetings. However, I had visited BU during Multicultural Community Weekend (MCW) through Admissions and met a lot of incredible people who were a part of Alianza Latina, BU’s Latinx Student Union. When I arrived at BU my freshman year, I remember being a bit overwhelmed by the amount of people on campus and was slightly terrified that I wouldn’t make a lot of friends.
